May Gear Picks — Best UK Outdoor Kit to Buy This Month

May: Peak Spring

May is arguably the most beautiful month for UK walking. Wildflowers are everywhere, the trees are fully leafed, evenings are long, and the weather is generally kind (by UK standards). Two bank holidays give you long weekend opportunities to get out properly.

1. Hydration Bladder — Around £25-40

As temperatures rise, carrying enough water becomes more important. A 2-3 litre hydration bladder in your pack lets you sip on the move without stopping to dig out a bottle. Osprey Hydraulics, Platypus Big Zip, and Source Widepac are all reliable options. Clean them properly after each use to prevent mould.

2. Sun Hat — Around £20-35

A proper wide-brimmed sun hat protects your face, ears, and neck far better than a cap. Sunday Afternoons Ultra Adventure, Tilley Airflo, or the classic Craghoppers NosiLife — all UPF 50+ and designed for active outdoor use. Worth every penny when you're walking exposed ridges in full sun.

3. Lightweight Waterproof — Around £100-200

May is when you might swap your heavy-duty winter waterproof for a lighter, more packable option. A 2.5-layer jacket that folds into its own pocket and weighs under 300g is perfect for the "probably won't rain but you never know" walks that define May. Rab Downpour, Berghaus Hyper 100, and Montane Minimus are all excellent lightweight options.

4. Camp Cooking Kit — Around £30-60

Longer evenings and warmer temperatures make outdoor cooking a pleasure rather than a chore. If your camp cooking setup is limited to a boil-in-the-bag, consider upgrading. A lightweight pot, a long-handled spork, a chopping board, and some basic spices transform camp meals. MSR, Jetboil, and Trangia all make brilliant compact cooking systems.

5. Blister Prevention Kit — Around £10-15

New boots, warmer feet, and longer walks mean May is peak blister season. Carry Compeed blister plasters, sports tape (for hotspot prevention), and merino liner socks. Applying tape to known hotspots before you start walking is far more effective than treating blisters after they form.

May bank holidays are busy at popular outdoor spots. For quieter walking, try midweek if you can, or head to less-known areas. The UK has thousands of brilliant walks that never appear on Instagram.
