Winter Camping Kit Guide for Cold UK Conditions 2026

Who Should Winter Camp?

Be honest with yourself. Winter camping in UK mountains requires:

  • Confident navigation in whiteout conditions
  • Experience with summer wild camping (at least 10+ nights)
  • Understanding of cold injury (hypothermia, frostbite)
  • Physical fitness for carrying heavier winter kit
  • Acceptance of genuine risk

If you're not there yet, build experience through autumn camping first.

Winter-Specific Tips

Keep batteries warm. Store power banks, phone and spare batteries inside your sleeping bag at night and in inner pockets during the day.

Everything takes longer. Setting up camp, cooking, getting dressed — budget twice the time you'd need in summer. Short daylight hours mean early starts.

Dry is warm. Manage moisture obsessively. Wet gear loses insulation. Air out your sleeping bag whenever possible. Brush snow off before entering the tent.

Eat constantly. Your body burns calories to stay warm. Eat calorie-dense food (nuts, chocolate, cheese) throughout the day and have a big meal before bed.

Winter Camping Requirements

UK winter camping demands: four-season or strong three-season tent, sleeping bag rated to -10C or below, sleeping mat with R-value 5+, stove that handles cold gas canisters, warm layers including down insulation, waterproof shell, and winter navigation skills.

Cold Weather Hazards

Hypothermia can develop quickly in winter conditions. Warning signs: uncontrollable shivering, confusion, slurred speech, drowsiness. Prevention: stay dry, eat regularly, stay active, and get into shelter at the first signs. Carry a group shelter (Terra Nova Bothy Bag) and know how to use it.
